OUR HISTORY

The United Nations adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child in 1959, which outlines children's rights to protection, education, health care, shelter and good nutrition. These privileges can only be realized when every society deliberately resolves to let no child be denied equal access to opportunities that can help them attain / reach their full potential in life - notwithstanding their gender, society or circumstances into which they are born. The heart of the Kasunga Foundation beats for innocent children growing up under no care but that of their incarcerated mothers, cut off even from simple basic needs enjoyed by their friends growing in normal home settings. Kasunga Foundation has therefore emerged out of the need to comprehensively and sustainably address the welfare of incarcerated mothers raising children in prison.

As if growing up in prison is not damaging enough to these children's development, they are also required to leave their mothers behind in prison as soon as they turn four. This creates a care-gap as some are never lucky enough to have anyone to provide them with the love and care they so desperately need outside prison. These innocent souls become - as it were - collateral victims of situations not of their own making. Kasunga would like to reach out to such and give them all the support possible.

Our Mission

To be the forerunner in issues pertaining to the welfare of mothers with children in prison across our beloved country of Zambia and possibly beyond.

Our Aim

Create and coordinate a team of effective care-givers who are completely sold out to the cause of rekindling the hope of both mothers and their children confined to various prisons through works of charity.

Vision

To see nursing incarcerated mothers recapture their hope for tomorrow, despite their circumstances and to ensure their children's needs are taken care of - in and outside prison - as we fulfill our mandate.

OUR GUIDING PRINCIPLES

Guiding Principles

  • Prioritizing providing the highest quality services
  • Enhancing coordination and networking
  • Accepting challenges
  • Use of sound and prudent financial management practices

OUR APPROACH

Our Approach

Kasunga’s method in ensuring success in its quest adopts a beneficiary participatory and sustainable approach through a wider community involvement and formation of volunteer groups in its areas of operations. This is aimed at ensuring that the planned interventions are sold out to the beneficiaries’ to have optimal use of resources while having maximum impact.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

At Kasunga Foundation we take pride that our NGO was formed with one premise in mind, and that is to bring hope for mothers and with children in prison. This is done by designing programs and projects aimed at bringing sustainable empowerment that leaves a lasting effect on the beneficiaries and the community. These can be dealt with continuous interventions based on designed frameworks that incorporate the requirements projected at each given phase and with the help of the communities by strategizing for growth and continuity.
